What makes this a special place to connect with nature?
There are so many reasons why this place is special to me but I would have to say the greatest reason because I was born and raised here. It's always been home.
Favorite memory here?
The first time I hiked and camped up on a mountain summit called Black Balsam Knob. Long story short I ended up on the mountain by pure chance and I truly believe that during that time something inside of me changed. I couldn't believe the beauty I was witnessing. Even though I had grown up in these mountains I wasn't aware of just how spectacular mountain summits can be. That same weekend I had to go back and camp right on top.

THE BLACK BALSAM KNOB OVERVIEW
In the heart of Southern Appalachia Black Balsam Knob is a favorite along the Blue Ridge Parkway just outside of Asheville, North Carolina. The hiking options are a plentiful for those that are looking to witness some spectacular sunrises and sunsets (but honestly, who isn't?).
Bald doesn't have the best reputation, unless you're talking about mountain tops. Black Balsam Knob's summit is bare of trees, which let's you take a nice glimpse around at the surrounding mountains. There's camping on the balds as well so don't be afraid to stay awhile. The weather can be a little fussy at the top, but well worth the morning views.
